1. Products
By now, it should go without saying that your company has to have at least one product.
An MLM without a product is a money game, and these are illegal in many countries.
The type of product your MLM supplies is much more open. Practically every
product and service you can imagine, from cleaning products, to jewellery, to web
hosting has been supplied by MLM, so your choice of product is pretty much up to
you and your imagination.
To market your business effectively, you need to sound enthusiastic and sincere.
If you think the product is rubbish, your prospects will pick up on this.
It's also worth picking a product that will appeal to a wide variety of people.
Hosting and internet services are a good choice, with so many people seeking to
develop their web presence, as are health and wellness products, which take advantage
of a trend for taking health supplements that shows no sign of going away.
2. The Company
It's important to do some research into the company itself before you sign up.
The most important question to ask is: How long have they been in business?
Brand new companies, particularly those that use a forced matrix structure (more
on this later), can present amazing opportunity, and are irresistible to many online
marketers. But the majority of MLMs fail within their first year, and many
of the survivors don't make it to the end of year two, so the risks in joining a
brand new company are very high. An exception to this would be a new company
started by an established MLM. They have the advantage of years of experience
in the industry, and the parent company can help out if the new starter runs into
financial difficulties.
At the other end of the scale are the "MLM giants". Amway is a well known
name in this category. The difficulty with this type of company is that everyone
has heard of it, many people have already tried it, and the market for its products
may be close to saturation. One of my past failures is Kleeneze, a very old
company based in the UK and Europe. I grew very disheartened with Kleeneze
because practically everyone I gave my product catalogue and business information
to could show me two that they'd received from other people. If I'd stuck
with it, I'm sure I would have succeeded, but building my business would have taken
a lot more time and financial investment that if I'd been working with a younger,
less well known company.
3. Business Plan
Also known as compensation or income plan. This is the commission structure
of the company, and it's very important that it's put together in such a way to
show clear and simple benefits for you and your prospects.
4. Promotion System
The company should have an automated follow-up system that is powerful, easy to
use, and lets you see where your prospects are coming from, so you can target your
advertising to get the best results from your efforts.
Use of Professional mlm
Software will help you.
5. Your Upline
It's important to choose your sponsor carefully. It's also worth considering
who is above your sponsor. If there's a problem with communication, and you
can't talk to your sponsor for some reason, or if the worst happens and your sponsor
leaves the company, who will you turn to for advice and support?
6. Website
Often overlooked, but it's important that the company website is attractive and
gives lots of information. This is not just for new prospects, although people
are more likely to linger on a site that looks nice and provides lots of information.
It's also for you and your new sign-ups. You (and they) will be happier using
a site that's easy on the eyes, and you will need plenty of information about the
business, to help you get used to the company, and to sound knowledgeable when talking
to new prospects.
